Signs Of Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

Exposure to Asbestos can be an occupational or environmental hazard. People who live in central Turkey are environmentally exposed to the naturally occurring asbestos in that area with some families having a genetic predisposition to the erionite in asbestos which causes Mesothelioma. Others at risk are families that live in old buildings containing asbestos. Children that are exposed are at a much higher risk to contract Mesothelioma. People who are occupationally exposed to asbestos are those who work in mines, mills, factories, naval shipyards that use the mineral in manufacturing. Other people subject to exposure to asbestos are construction workers who remodel old buildings or are involved in their demolition. Also asbestos can be brought home on clothing which can cause second hand exposure to family members.  Finally, studies show asbestos exposure and cigarette smoke (a carcinogen) put you at a 90 times greater risk for lung cancer.
Symptoms to the conditions above include coughing, shortness of breath (due to pleural effusion which is fluid between the lung and chest wall), chest wall pain, and weight loss. Diagnosis is suspect by chest x-ray and CT scan. It is confirmed with a biopsy and microscopic examination. A thoracoscopy test (camera and tube into the lung) may also be done. Treatment involves chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery. Sadly to say, all carry a poor prognosis and screening tests for early detection are ongoing. At this time an elevated serum osteopontin level may be the only clue available to the onset of these illnesses.
Since asbestos exposure is unhealthy and hazardous and leads to serious health conditions, today occupational safety standards against exposure in the work place are in force. The use of respirators, protective clothing, exposure monitoring, hygiene facilities and practices, warning signs, labeling, record keeping, and medical exams. The key factor against exposure is the wearing of personal protective equipment which is essential to lowering the risk.
Because asbestos has been in use for over a century now, millions of American workers have been unknowingly exposed to its devastating effects to the body if inhaled. If you have become a mesothelioma patient yourself you need to be aware of your rights and pursue legal action if necessary. Hopefully this article has made you aware of the dangers and warning signs to you and your family that you may be able to avoid exposure and its serious consequences

Why Mesothelioma Is Preventable

by Curtis Burke

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. This disease attacks the protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs and in almost all cases is fatal, although new treatments for cancer are always underdevelopment giving us hope we may live cancer free sometime in the future.

You can avoid mesothelioma by not exposing yourself to asbestos. Typically a worker was exposed to asbestos on their job. In the past asbestos was widely used in the large industrial manufacturing industry, the automotive industry and the heating and ventilating industry. Typical exposure is from inhaling asbestos dust a by product of manufacturing. When the worker goes home, their family experiences secondary exposure to the asbestos dust on their clothing.

In residential construction during 1960's and 1970's, asbestos was commonly use to seal leaks and seams on heating ducts in residential houses and in other heating and ventilation systems. Exposure to asbestos dust comes when the asbestos seal begins to breakdown and gives off the deadly asbestos dust particles. So, if you are buying an older home, be certain to have it inspected for asbestos. If found, asbestos can be removed or sealed with a protective cover to prevent exposure to humans.

Detection of mesothelioma and drawing the connection between work-related hazards wasn't always realized. It has only come to light recently that large corporations were negligent in exposing their workers to asbestos dust. This is due to the fact that it takes some time for the cancer to form. Most families were so consumed with helping their loved ones; they failed to realize the cancer they were battling was actually caused by the working conditions of a loved one.

If an individual was exposed to asbestos during their working career then the corporation employing them is at fault and is responsible for the damages resulting from the asbestos caused mesothelioma. Individuals and families battling mesothelioma and facing the loss of a loved one need realize and understand their legal rights.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma then you need to consult with a mesothelioma lawyer to understand your legal rights. This type of lawyer is experienced with asbestos related cases and taking on the large corporations and winning. Typically, a mesothelioma lawyer will review your case at little or no charge to evaluate if you have a case. If it is determined you do they will handle the lawsuit for damages from the corporation responsible.

It is a shame to think your life or a loved ones life is cut short due to the negligence of a corporation not controlling the exposure to asbestos. You may be uncomfortable with a lawsuit, but it is your legal right to seek adequate compensation for your life or a loved ones being cut short and the resulting impact of not being able to provide for the family any longer.

Asbestos caused mesothelioma is a preventable disease and it's sad to think an employee who works hard for a corporation is actually killed slowly by the exposure to asbestos. If you're dealing with mesothelioma in your life, seek the help of a mesothelioma lawyer to ensure your financial future peace of mind while you and your family deal with the loss of a loved one.

How To Understand Mesothelioma Symptom

by Christopher Smith

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer which affects the mesothelium. Pleural, peritoneal and pericardial are the three forms of mesothelioma. It is a serious form of cancer and occurs due to asbestos exposure for a prolonged period of time. Mesothelioma symptom appears after many years of being infected. Most of the mesothelioma deaths occur since the infection is diagnosed at developed stages of the disease.

Similar symptoms are shown by all the three types of mesothelioma cancer and the exact diagnosis can be done only by an experienced medical practitioner. Many deaths have occurred due to the wrong diagnosis and delayed treatment due to it. The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are difficulty in swallowing, shortness of breath, hoarseness, building up of excess fluid between the pleura known as pleural effusion, coughing up of blood, pain in abdomen, chest, shoulder or arm, weight loss, loss of appetite, fever etc.

Depending of the seriousness of the disease, the symptoms may vary from person to person. About 90% of the patients experience chest pain and shortness of breath, 84% suffer pleural effusion and less than 30% bear weight loss. It should also be noted that around 3% of the patients remain without any symptoms.

Pain or swelling in the abdomen, high fever, problems associated with bowel movements, weight loss etc are experienced by peritoneal mesothelioma patients. A few patients may go through additional mesothelioma symptoms where as some may not witness all the above mentioned symptoms. The symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma are persistent cough, pain of varying degrees, tiredness without any physical exertion etc.

Once the disease is properly identified through the tests and symptoms the first thing to do is to decide up on a winning treatment formula. Mesothelioma symptom normally appears when one has crossed his prime age. This is a serious handicap in the way for a complete cure. Once the treatment is finalized, the actual process starts in earnest. Localized tumors can be eradicated by surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation may be required if the cancer is in the advanced stages, but the results are not always positive.

Mesothelioma Treatment Technique: Photodynamic Therapy

by Jason Wentworth

Mesothelioma is an asbestos-related cancer that presently has no cure. However, there are experimental treatments available that may improve the quality of life for some mesothelioma patients. Some mesothelioma treatment techniques are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, gene therapy, immunotherapy and photodynamic therapy.

Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of bodily cavities such as the chest or abdomen. It is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a dangerous mineral that was used in products such as roofing shingles, floor tiles, clutches, cement siding panels, roofing felts and brake pads. Working with asbestos products involves a risk that asbestos fibers will be released and then inhaled. After asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can become lodged in the chest or abdominal cavity. The trapped asbestos fibers can lead to the development of various types of malignant mesothelioma such as pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma affects the chest cavity. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdomen.

Photodynamic therapy for mesothelioma cancer

Photodynamic therapy is a treatment technique involving the use of a drug known as a photosensitizing agent and a certain type of light. When the photosensitizing agent comes into contact with a certain type of light, a form of oxygen is produced that kills nearby cells. Photodynamic therapy is used to treat tumors that exist on the skin or just below the skin or on the lining of internal organs. Photodynamic therapy has been used to treat skin cancer, non-small cell lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma cancer. Photodynamic therapy is usually not effective for mesothelioma patients whose cancer has spread too far.

Photodynamic therapy: Side effects

For approximately 6 weeks after photodynamic therapy, the patient's eyes and skin may be sensitive to light. This side-effect can be managed however by avoiding direct exposure to bright light. Other possible side-effects include burns, scarring, swelling and pain in healthy tissue that is near the cancerous area.
